The pyrogenic effect of scarlet fever toxin. IV. Pyrogenicity of strain C 203 U filtrate: comparison with some basic characteristics of the known types of scarlet fever toxin.

چکیده
The pyrogenic activity of scarlet fever toxin has been described a number of times. The "classic" toxin, prepared from the Dochez NY 5 strain, was found to have a double specificity, designed by Hooker and Follensby as "A" and "B".1 More recently, Watson has analyzed the antigenic components of this toxin and found a third type, which he has denoted "C"1.2 In working with a mutant strain of streptococcus, C 203 U, which produces streptolysin 0 but not S, the present authors made the observation that broth culture filtrates of this strain were pyrogenic. An attempt has been made to determine the relationship of this pyrogen to other streptococcal pyrogens described previously.

Group A streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxins A, B, and C (also known as scarlet fever toxins and erythrogenic toxins) were evaluated for relatedness to another streptococcus-derived lymphocyte mitogen, blastogen A. Streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin A and blastogen A were immunologically cross-reactive and shared the same molecular weight, N-terminal amino acid sequence, and capacity to stimulate ra...

Introduction: Chickenpox is a contagious febrile illness with rash that is caused by varicella zoster virus. Most children up to age 15 are infected with the virus. Scarlet fever is caused by erythrogenic toxin of streptococcus group A and usually causes skin reactions such as fine red and often itchy papules on the trunk and extremities as well as skin redness, especially on the groin and fore...

There are few reports in the literature (1--4) on the pyrogenicity of streptococci or streptococcal filtrates. The most recent detailed investigations on streptococcal pyrogenic activity were reported by Stetson (5) and Watson (6). Stetson reported on the endotoxic activity of Group A streptococci grown in vitro. On the basis of studies with lysates of streptococci disrupted in a Mickle disinte...

Staphylococcal pyrogenic exotoxin (PE) types A and B were tested for their role in production of a scarlatiniform rash. The PEs elicited minimal skin reactions after intracutaneous injection into animals not presensitized to the toxins. In contrast, erythematous injection into animals not presensitized to the toxins. In contrast, erythematous and edematous rashes were produced after administrat...

The factors present in streptococcal lesion extracts (SLE) which enhanced the lethal and tissue-damaging properties of Gram-negative bacterial endotoxins and streptolysin O were identified with the scarlet fever group of toxins. Toxic manifestations attributed to this group of toxins included lethality, cardiotoxic and other tissue damage, enhancement of toxicity, and pyrogenicity. Of these, th...
